Description:
Main Purpose: To program and operate manual machines and basic CNC machines in the machine shop according to specifications and to maximise capacity and productivity by adhering to Company’s policies and procedures and health and safety principles.
Key Performance Areas:
- Read, understand drawings and ensure work is completed in accordance to codes and specifications (especially tolerances).
- Operate, Lathe, Milling Radial Arm Drill and Cut Off Saw machines.
- Adhere to daily target and assignments.
- Maintain discipline i.e. timekeeping, attendance and quality of workmanship.
- Ensure that all tools are in good working condition, i.e. hand tools, portable electrical equipment (grinders, pencil grinders) gas equipment (cutting torch).
- Housekeeping to be maintained daily.
- Do stamp transfer and request QC for verifications and NDT’s.
- Do proper planning to execute the work to the client’s specification and the Company’s standards i.e. quality, productivity and safety.
- Perform to target settings as per schedule.
- Minimise scrap and verify program with Chargehand before hot work.
- Ensure adherence to internal control standard (work to work orders and ITP).
- Operate the manual and CNC machines according to safety specifications.
- Get specific work done in time, safely and within quality.
- Willing to learn and operate critical machines (Fermat vertical and Goratu horizontal milling with Heindenhein software).
- Any other job-related duties as required from time to time.

Preferred Requirements:
- Grade 12.
- N5 in Mechanical would be preferable.
- Qualified Artisan – Red Seal.
- 3 Years’ experience working in a machine shop, especially manual lathes and boring mills within the power industry.
- Experience in using hand tools.
- Experience in working in a heavy engineering fabrication and within a machine shop facility.
- Knowledge of using measuring equipment (verniers, calipers, tapes, laser alignment, level gauge, depth gauge micrometer, etc.).
- Knowledge of machining of high pressure and high temperature (thick walled) components in the power industry.
- Knowledge of risk assessment, relevant machining practices, standards and procedures.
- Knowledge of materials, tools and machining equipment.
- Knowledge of relevant safety requirements within machine shop.
- Must be able to read, understand and interpret technical and component drawings and able to learn and check programs.
- Understand and adhere to safety protocols – lock out and tag out when working on machines, work permits for heights, pressurised equipment etc.
- Work to work packs from planning, maintenance request works order, planned maintenance schedule, verbal instructions, drawings and time constraints (analyse the drawings, determine the tooling and consumables to be used and the machine to be used).
- Always ensure the correct use of PPE.
- Must be able to operate manual lathe and boring mills.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Computer literate (MS Office).
