🎯 Purpose of the Role
The Registered Nurse – ICU Experienced with Cardiothoracic Background provides advanced nursing care to critically ill patients, particularly those undergoing or recovering from cardiothoracic surgery. The role ensures safe, evidence-based practice in intensive care settings, while supporting surgeons and multidisciplinary teams in achieving optimal patient outcomes.
🩺 Key Responsibilities
• Clinical Care
• Deliver specialized nursing care to cardiothoracic ICU patients.
• Monitor hemodynamics, ventilators, infusion pumps, and chest drains.
• Assist in the management of patients post-open-heart and thoracic surgery.
• Administer medications and therapies in line with ICU and cardiothoracic protocols.
• Respond promptly to emergencies and deteriorating patient conditions.
• Patient & Family Support
• Provide education and emotional support to patients and families regarding cardiothoracic procedures and recovery.
• Facilitate clear communication about treatment plans and progress.
• Team Collaboration
• Work closely with cardiothoracic surgeons, anaesthetists, and allied health professionals.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, handovers, and case discussions.
• Operational Support
• Maintain accurate patient records and documentation.
• Ensure adherence to infection control and safety standards.
• Contribute to audits, risk assessments, and quality improvement initiatives.
Requirements:
📋 Qualifications & Experience
• Registered Nurse (RN) with valid registration at the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• Post-basic qualification in Critical Care Nursing / ICU Nursing.
• Minimum 2–3 years’ ICU experience, with exposure to cardiothoracic cases.
• Cardiothoracic theatre or ICU background (essential).
• Advanced Life Support (ALS) or equivalent certification (advantageous).
