The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated and professional individual to manage SANBI’s projects related to Natural Capital Accounting (NCA), including the NCA component of the Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) project.

This position requires a degree in Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, Ecology, Economic and Management Sciences, or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. A postgraduate qualification in Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, Ecology, Economic and Management Sciences, or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 8 years of work experience in the relevant field, 4 years of which should be in first-line management position(s).

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position : Exposure to and knowledge of natural capital accounting and/or ecosystem accounting and/or ecological infrastructure and or ecosystem services and/or spatial biodiversity assessment and planning; Experience in managing complex projects including participatory project planning; Experience in engaging and managing relationships with high level stakeholders; Analytical and conceptual abilities; Problem-solving abilities; Excellent English writing and communication skills, including the ability to write large reports; Complex project development and implementation ; Facilitation and presentation skills; conflict resolution skills; Ability to operate with a wide range of stakeholders, including high-level stakeholders, in a broad range of circumstances; Valid code B driver’s licence; Proficiency in MS office and the candidate must be in possession of a valid driver’s licence and must be willing to travel.

Key Performance Responsibilities include:

  • Manage and co-ordinate the development of priority ecosystem accounts and other NCA project deliverables;
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, and convene stakeholders in support of NCA work
  • Provide project management and financial management functions for SANBI’s natural capital accounting projects; and
  • Promote communication and outreach for NCA work.
