Job Purpose
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel vehicles and equipment in line with standard operating procedures and SHEQ requirements. The role requires an experienced, trade-tested individual who can work independently, respond to breakdowns, and support workshop operations across vehicles and earthmoving machinery.
Minimum Requirements
-
Grade 12 or NQF Level 4 equivalent.
-
QCTO Qualified Diesel Mechanic (Trade Tested).
-
Minimum 5 years’ post–trade test experience as a Diesel Technician.
-
Valid Code B driver’s licence (Code EC preferred).
-
Experience working on earthmoving and material-handling equipment.
-
Physically fit, self-motivated, and able to work under pressure without supervision.
-
Willing to work long hours, weekends, and overtime for breakdowns on a 24-hour shift basis.
-
Computer literate (Microsoft Office).
-
Strong commitment to safety, quality, and SHEQ standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
-
Attend and/or lead daily planning meetings and respond to maintenance requests and breakdowns.
-
Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and drivetrain faults.
-
Perform routine, preventative, and breakdown maintenance according to SOPs.
-
Replace or repair components using new or reconditioned parts and retest equipment.
-
Identify wear patterns, conduct root cause analysis, and make maintenance recommendations.
-
Maintain accurate maintenance records, timesheets, and ISO checklists.
-
Order required spare parts and manage job hour utilisation.
-
Ensure all work complies with SHEQ and safety standards.
-
Maintain clean, organised, and safe work areas, tools, and PPE.
-
Mentor mechanical assistants and support apprentice training.
-
Perform general workshop and site housekeeping and other ad hoc duties as required.
