Job PurposeThe Game Ranger is responsible for wildlife monitoring, habitat management, anti-poaching patrols, guest interaction, and ensuring the safety and conservation of the reserve. The role also includes guiding activities, conducting patrols, and supporting ecological management to maintain a balanced and healthy wildlife environment. Key ResponsibilitiesWildlife Monitoring & ConservationConduct regular patrols to monitor wildlife behaviour, distribution, and health.Assist with game counts, animal tracking, and ecological data collection.Report injuries, unusual behaviour, and environmental concerns.Support reserve management in conservation projects and habitat restoration.Anti-Poaching & SecurityConduct anti-poaching patrols and surveillance.Monitor fence lines, boundaries, and entry/exit points on the reserve.Report suspicious activity immediately to management.Ensure the safety of wildlife and guests at all times.Guest Interaction & Guiding (if applicable)Educate guests about wildlife, ecosystems, and conservation efforts.Conduct guided bush walks or vehicle safaris in a safe and professional manner.Ensure compliance with safety protocols during guest activities.Provide informative and enjoyable guest experiences.Habitat & Reserve MaintenanceAssist in clearing alien vegetation, bush control, and fire management.Maintain roads, water points, hides, and reserve infrastructure.Support operational tasks such as fence checks, erosion control, and vehicle care.Administration & ReportingKeep accurate patrol logs, incident reports, and wildlife monitoring data.Participate in meetings, training, and reserve planning sessions.Maintain equipment such as binoculars, radios, firearms (if required), and uniforms. Qualifications
  • FGASA Field Guide or Game Ranger certification (preferred).
  • Tracking qualification (advantageous).
  • Valid driver’s license and PDP (for guest activities).
  • Firearm competency certificate (if carrying a rifle for dangerous game areas).
  • First Aid Level 1 or higher (essential).
Experience
  • 1–3+ years as a Game Ranger, Field Guide, or Conservation Officer.
  • Experience with wildlife monitoring, patrols, and guest guiding advantageous.
  • Exposure to reserve management, land care, or ecological projects is beneficial.
Technical Skills
  • Strong wildlife identification and tracking skills.
  • Knowledge of conservation practices, habitats, and ecosystems.
  • Ability to operate 4x4 vehicles and basic mechanical understanding.
  • Radio communication and GPS/navigation skills.
  • Firearm handling (if applicable to the reserve).
Core Competencies
  • Strong observational skills and situational awareness.

  • Physical fitness and ability to work in harsh outdoor conditions.
