HEAD WAITER – Job DescriptionA Head Waiter oversees the dining service operations by supervising waitstaff, ensuring excellent guest service, and maintaining high standards throughout the restaurant or dining area. This role involves coordinating service flow, supporting staff during busy periods, resolving guest concerns, and ensuring a smooth, professional, and memorable dining experience.Key ResponsibilitiesSupervise and support waiters/waitresses during service.Ensure all guests receive exceptional service from arrival to departure.Greet guests, assist with seating, and check in on tables throughout service.Train, guide, and mentor junior waitstaff on service standards, menu knowledge, and etiquette.Coordinate service between the kitchen, bar, and floor staff.Ensure tables are set up correctly according to service standards.Monitor service quality and handle guest complaints or special requests.Assist with taking orders and serving food and beverages when needed.Conduct pre-service briefings to communicate menu changes, specials, and station assignments.Ensure accurate order-taking and communication with the kitchen.Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the dining area.Manage reservations and assist hosts/hostesses when required.Oversee opening and closing procedures for the restaurant or dining room.Ensure adherence to food safety and hygiene standards.Assist with inventory, stock checks, and ordering of service-related items.Maintain excellent communication with management regarding service issues or improvements. Qualifications & Experience- Matric / Grade 12 preferred.
- 2–4 years experience as a waiter/waitress in a hotel, lodge, or busy restaurant.
- Prior experience in a supervisory or senior waiter role is highly advantageous.
- Strong knowledge of food and beverage service standards.
- POS system experience preferred.
- Excellent leadership and team supervision skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
- High attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
- Ability to multitask and coordinate operations efficiently.
- Customer-focused, with a warm and professional demeanour.
- Ability to handle complaints calmly and efficiently.
