Main Purpose of the Job
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of heavy-duty mining equipment and vehicles to ensure optimal performance and equipment availability. This role requires a qualified artisan who can work independently on a mine site, adhering to safety and quality standards at all times.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose, service, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults on heavy mining equipment (e.g., dump trucks, loaders, graders, excavators, and compressors).
- Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance and field breakdown repairs.
- Inspect, test, and adjust systems and components using diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Overhaul engines, transmissions, differentials, and final drives as required.
- Identify root causes of mechanical failures and recommend corrective actions.
- Use diagnostic software and manuals to troubleshoot faults efficiently.
- Document all maintenance and repair work accurately in job cards or digital systems.
- Adhere to mine site safety rules, procedures, and PPE requirements.
- Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, and safety meetings.
- Maintain work areas, tools, and equipment in a clean and safe condition.
- Report recurring faults or potential equipment risks to the Foreman or Maintenance Supervisor.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability.
- Ensure all repairs meet OEM and company standards.
- Complete maintenance reports, parts requisitions, and time sheets accurately.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and operators to coordinate repairs and downtime.

- Mining: 1 to 2 years
- Diesel Mechanic: 3 to 4 years
- Hydraulics: 2 to 3 years
- Matric / Grade 12 (essential)
- Qualified Diesel Mechanic (Red Seal – Trade Test Certificate)
- Minimum 2–5 years experience working on heavy earthmoving or mining equipment
- Must have own transport and a valid driver’s licence
- Proficient in hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems
- Computer literacy and experience with maintenance systems (advantageous)
- Medically fit for mine site work
- Matric / Grade 12 (essential)
- Qualified Diesel Mechanic (Red Seal – Trade Test Certificate)
- Minimum 2–5 years experience working on heavy earthmoving or mining equipment
